Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) - SLS Prototype
Industry & Manufacturing April 23rd, 2009SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) is a procedure through which 3D objects are designed with the help of fusing powdered materials or different metals. There is a wide range of materials that can be used to make prototype objects. The selection of the materials depends upon the physical properties of the objects. Right selection of the material for prototyping can give you 100% properties of your physical objects.
The most common materials that are being used are nylon, metals and steel. The advantage of SLS is that you can make complex designs that cannot be make through other prototyping methods or difficult to make. The shapes designed through SLS technology is completely resemble to the computer made design with the help of CAD.
A Technical Overview of SLS
In SLS prototyping, a 3D design is converted into physical object by fusing powder thermoplastic or any other material with a sharp and heat beam of Carbon Dioxide Laser beam. An object is firstly cut down in 2D layers and then make layer by layer. These models are directly designed from 3D CAD models.
Industrial Use Of SLS
SLS prototyping is used in the wide range of industry from aero space to medical and from education to automotive industry. The use of SLS in medical makes the thing easier for surgical instruments manufacturers. SLS is used to make Dental Copings, surgical tools and medical instruments. Thanks to this technology that makes thing easier than ever before.
